1. Grand Prix (Gold Award) for DFW, MCO, & TSA projects

On August 25th, the global Digital Signage awards were announced virtually. These awards are independent, and impartial, and searched annually for outstanding campaigns, creative executions and technical innovations, and remarkable media or placement solutions in the fields of digital signage, DOOH advertising and digital visual experiences from around the globe. Past winners include Second Story and Nanolumens for their incredible Legacy Union project.

The global Digital Signage Awards are completely independent and, over the last twelve years, have recognized great companies, projects, content, campaigns, and products from across the world. Working hand-in-hand with media partner Sixteen:Nine, they are supported by leading companies keen to promote excellence and innovation throughout the sector. This year’s Grand Prix Winners were project partners Synect and YCD Multimedia for their outstanding airport collaborations at DFW, MCO, and with the TSA.

2. Management and other software category

Global Digital Signage Award for Better, Faster TSA Security Checkpoints
Built on YCD’s powerful Cnario platform, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Innovation Task Force (ITF) leveraged YCD’s digital signage solutions for implementation at the Innovation Checkpoint at McCarran International Airport. The ITF program replaced traditional print stanchions, lessened Transportation Security Officer interactions with passengers, and let officers activate various operational scenarios via tablets. Custom content packages and libraries were created for TSA, which were designed to engage viewers and enhance passenger experience.

To extend an airport’s visual communication system, YCD’s Cnario Content Management System (CMS) drives layers of content and dynamic data across a digital signage networks. This fully integrated solution is an intelligent, autonomous deployment that integrates with airport systems and makes programming decisions based on flight schedules, real-time airport activities, and more. Cnario itself is highly adaptable software that plays well with others without sacrificing performance or features. Because it resides either on-premise or in-cloud, Cnario remains the ideal choice for security-focused airports across the country. Cnario supports a variety of content types, spanning from interactive HTML5 to 8K videos with alpha.

The project was a massive success. The units helped increase efficiency and throughput but became an essential part of helping customers adapt to new technologies and procedures at the Innovation Checkpoint. The feedback from both the local TSA Federal Security Director and TSA staff supports the solution’s effectiveness and benefits for the traveling public. Transportation Security Officers (TSO) see passengers arriving at the Automated Screening Lanes (ASLs) with their documents ready and liquids removed. McCarran airport operations staff appreciates the units’ small footprint and their ability to blend into the security lanes.
Following the evaluation, TSA greenlit the program for nationwide adoption. Units have been deployed to Orlando International Airport, Reagan National Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and elsewhere.

3. Creative Execution: Visualization of dynamic, integrated data for business purpose category.
Global Digital Signage Award for MCO Evenflow Crowd RADA

As passengers return to the skies in record numbers, airports must address crowding and help passengers comfortably navigate busy environments. This technology debuted at the Orlando International Airport (MCO) and helped enhance passenger experience by dramatically reducing crowding.

Using anonymous crowd monitoring technology, our partners designed a system driven by Cnario, to help passengers navigate complex environments and avoid crowded spaces. Content, which can be customized to match any airport or brand, visually engages viewers, and elicits not just the desired effect, but also the desired emotion.

At MCO, the content played on the airport’s check-in video wall and strategically placed units. Anonymous crowd monitoring technology and accompanying color-coded lights informed passengers of the areas and routes that were the most and least crowded.

YCD’s Cnario Content Management System (CMS) drives layers of content and dynamic data across a digital signage network. These solutions drive the Evenflow Crowd Radar program.

Evenflow Crowd Radar was hailed as a massive success by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) and the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Airport Consortium on Customer Trust.

4 + 5. Creative Execution – creative response to Covid-19 for MCO COVID Response Campaign &
Public Spaces – COVID19 response

As Orlando International Airport (MCO) reemerged post-COVID for travelers they implemented an airport-wide visual communications campaign to ensure safety information was readily presented to travelers. The animated content was created based on guidelines from the CDC, Florida, and Orange County, as well as airport policies. It included reminders about handwashing, social distancing, cleaning, and more, and was designed to be easily understood and visually soothing.

These visual messages play across the many digital canvases in the ecosystem, including the curbside, self-check-in, massive check-in video walls, and the totems throughout the airport. The ecosystem consists of 1,199 displays in the airport’s North Terminal, including LCD, LED, indoor, outdoor, single display, and massive video wall canvases.

Using best-in-class strategy, content, and technology, the teams delivered a timely, effective visual communications campaign shortly after the emergence of COVID-19.

6. Technical Achievement for GATE OF tomorrow at DFW

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is transforming travel and reimagining passenger experience at their airport gates. In collaboration with DFW’s customer experience team, YCD Multimedia and Synect delivered a scalable content management system to drive the new Gates of Tomorrow media. The content includes localized media celebrating the region, ambient visuals to calm and engage passengers, and integrated visual instructions to ease passengers through boarding. The result is an accessible, immersive, lounge-like experience at the gates and a flexible platform for future airport innovation.

Custom content plays over the many digital displays at the gate. Localized live-action content from the DFW region creates a memorable sense of place, and ambient content reflects the time of day and thrill of air travel. Visual boarding instructions driven by the gate schedule help ease passengers through security. The custom content is shown on a variety of LED and LCD technology, including four 65” 4k LCDs and six LEDs including two 1600×600 arrays and four 1024×256 arrays. Additionally, the digital signage system triggers the lighting system through a synchronized video channel.

Highlights of the implementation at DFW include:

  • Full integration with the airport operations database (AODB)
  • Boarding sequence controller at the gate through a custom application
  • Real-time curated message capabilities
  • Real-time flight information is digested and presented in custom designs
  • Ecosystem design and the pixel-perfect background videos change in real time based on sophisticated logic that considers the states at the gates, existing and future flights, time of day and pre-defined business rules

7. Creative Execution – Other Marketing and Communications Purposes for Fish Tank Digital Experience at MCO

Orlando International Airport (MCO) uses a massive visual communication ecosystem to enhance passenger experience throughout the airport. In collaboration with the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA), a digital 3D fish tank was created that mesmerizes, delights, and informs passengers at security. The content created by our partners at Synect, features realistic sea creatures and layers of helpful content. Wayfinding, estimated wait times, concessions information, and an integrated QR code share the digital fish tank with pufferfish, eels, and schooling fish. 3D models and real-world footage were used to create a lifelike illusion with small, intentional imperfections like reflections, refractions, and scratches on the glass.

The LED video walls at MCO are part of the visual communication ecosystem that includes digital canvases at the curbside, check-in, wayfinding, and beyond. The ecosystem consists of 1,199 displays in the airport’s North Terminal, including LCD, LED, indoor, outdoor, single display, and massive video wall canvases. The Fish Tank Experience is displayed on two LED video walls, which are both 6864X624.
